Message from USGS Nevada Water Science Center Director

Welcome to the USGS Nevada Water Science Center (NVWSC) website! The NVWSC is dedicated to collecting reliable hydrologic data and conducting unbiased scientific research on the quantity, quality, and use of surface and groundwater resources in Nevada and nearby states.

We provide the public, partners, and stakeholders with the information needed to understand and make informed decisions about Nevada's water resources. We have two primary offices: one in Carson City and one in Boulder City. Our highly trained staff includes scientists, technicians, and support personnel who are dedicated to delivering reliable and unbiased water resource information.

Our technical staff is organized into two sections: the Networks Section, which operates data collection networks, and the Studies Section, which conducts research on Nevada's water resources, including quantity, quality, and usage.

The Networks Section maintains a network of hydrologic data collection sites and compiles the data for public use. This hydrologic data includes:

  • Stage and discharge of major rivers and streams

  • Water quality

  • Water levels in selected aquifers

This data is archived in USGS databases and is publicly accessible through the USGS Water Data for the Nation webpage. Many sites provide real-time data using satellite telemetry to transmit current conditions from over 200 real-time stations in Nevada

The Studies Section conducts research on surface and groundwater resources through various projects. Our focus is to provide timely, objective information about water supply availability, water quality, water source identification, and water resource management.
