USGS assistance to USEPA on the Pohatcong Valley Superfund Site
New Jersey WSC Archived Projects
The goal of this project is to assist EPA in hydrogeologic investigations and perform a groundwater flow assessment in the Pohatcong Valley area to determine probable source of contamination of wells.
START DATE: 30-SEP-1999
END DATE: 31-DEC-2006
PROJECT NUMBER: 2454ABH
STUDY OBJECTIVES:
USGS will assist EPA in hydrogeologic investigations and perform a groundwater flow assessment in the Pohatcong Valley area to deterrmine probable source of contamination of wells.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM:
Contamination of groundwater in the Pohatcong Valley is a cconcern because it is a sole source of drinking water for publication and private wells in the area.
STRATEGY AND APPROACH:
Conduct review of available data in aquifer tests and withdrawals, participate in field investigations with EPA contractor for water quality, water levels, packer tests, tracer tests and geophysical investigations. Perform synoptic streamflow survey. Use data to perform a groundwater flow assessment.
