Case histories of bald eagles and other raptors killed by organophosphorus insecticides topically applied to livestock Case histories of bald eagles and other raptors killed by organophosphorus insecticides topically applied to livestock
Since 1982 when secondary poisoning of a red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) was documented following the recommended use of famphur applied topically to cattle, the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center has tested dead birds of prey for poisoning by famphur and other pouron organophosphorus (OP) insecticides. Brain cholinesterase (ChE) activity was first determined, then if ChE was...

Seasonal variation in diagnostic enzymes and biochemical constituents of captive northern bobwhites and passerines Seasonal variation in diagnostic enzymes and biochemical constituents of captive northern bobwhites and passerines
1. A variety of biochemical measurements were taken periodically in captive northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus L.), European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris L.), red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus L.) and common grackles (Quiscalus quiscula L.) to determine whether baseline values remain sufficiently stable throughout the year for general clinical use in the absence of concurrent...

Relation of pH and other soil variables to concentrations of Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Se in earthworms Relation of pH and other soil variables to concentrations of Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Se in earthworms
Various soil treatments (clay, composted peat, superphosphate, sulfur, calcium carbonate, calcium chloride, zinc chloride, selenous acid) were added to experimental field plots to test the effect of different soil variables on the concentrations of 5 elements in earthworms (Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd. SE). Concentrations of the 5 elements were related to 9 soil variables (soil Pb, soil Cu, soil Zn...

Toxicity of paraquat in nestling birds: effects on plasma and tissue biochemistry in American kestrels Toxicity of paraquat in nestling birds: effects on plasma and tissue biochemistry in American kestrels
Beginning the day after hatching, American kestrel (Falco sparverius) nestlings were orally dosed daily for 10 days with 5 μL/g of distilled water (controls), 10 mg/kg, 25 mg/kg, or 60 mg/kg of paraquat dichloride (1,1′-dimethyl-4,4′-bipyridinium dichloride) in distilled water. Forty-four percent of the nestlings receiving 60 mg/kg died after 4 days. Plasma LDH activity and total protein

Feeding methods and efficiencies of selected frugivorous birds Feeding methods and efficiencies of selected frugivorous birds
I report on handling methods and efficiencies of 26 species of Paraguayan birds freeding on fruits of Allophyllus edulis (Sapindaceae). A bird may swallow fruits whole (Type I: pluck and swallow feeders), hold a fruit and cut the pulp from the seed with the edge of the bill, swallowing the pulp but not the seed (Type II: cut or mash feeders), or take bites of pulp from a fruit that hangs...

Sensitivity of high-elevation streams in the Southern Blue Ridge Province to acidic deposition Sensitivity of high-elevation streams in the Southern Blue Ridge Province to acidic deposition
The Southern Blue Ridge Province, which encompasses parts of northern Georgia, eastern Tennessee, and western North Carolina, has been predicted to be sensitive to impacts from acidic deposition, owing to the chemical composition of the bedrock geology and soils. This study confirms the predicted potential sensitivity, quantifies the level of total alkalinity and describes the chemical
