Molt and taxonomy of red-breasted nuthatches Molt and taxonomy of red-breasted nuthatches
The postnuptial and postjuvenal molts of Red-breasted Nuthatches occur from middle June to late September. Some birds may be nearly finished with the complete molt before other individuals begin, so that specimens taken at any given time may differ by as much as two months in the age of their plumage. Mass movement of black fly larvae on silken threads (Diptera: Simuliidae) Mass movement of black fly larvae on silken threads (Diptera: Simuliidae)
Stoppage of waterflow in a stream resulted in the migration of massive numbers of black fly larvae on silken threads. Larvae were found on single silken threads, but the heaviest concentrations were on “cables” composed of 25-50 individual silken threads. The larvae were attached in concentric rings around the silken threads and cables.
