Natural fertility in whooping cranes and Mississippi sandhill cranes at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center Natural fertility in whooping cranes and Mississippi sandhill cranes at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center
The first fertile whooping crane (Grus americana; WC) egg produced through natural breeding at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (Patuxent) was laid in 1991. Prior to that time, all fertile whooping crane eggs were the result of artificial insemination. Since 1991, eight different whooping crane pairs at Patuxent have produced fertile eggs through natural breeding. Mean fertility...

Modeling avian detection probabilities as a function of habitat using double-observer point count data Modeling avian detection probabilities as a function of habitat using double-observer point count data
Point counts are a controversial sampling method for bird populations because the counts are not censuses, and the proportion of birds missed during counting generally is not estimated. We applied a double-observer approach to estimate detection rates of birds from point counts in Maryland, USA, and test whether detection rates differed between point counts conducted in field habitats as...

Results of the first ultralight-led sandhill crane migration in eastern North America Results of the first ultralight-led sandhill crane migration in eastern North America
In 1997, we led 8 sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) south from Ontario, Canada by ultralight aircraft to a wintering area near Warrenton, Virginia, an area without a wild population. Six others were transported south in a trailer in hopes they would return north with those that flew. The migration was 863 km long, included 14 stops, and took 21 days to complete. All 13 surviving birds...

Diets of nesting laughing gulls (Larus atricilla) at the Virginia Coast Reserve: observations from stable isotope analysis Diets of nesting laughing gulls (Larus atricilla) at the Virginia Coast Reserve: observations from stable isotope analysis
Food web studies often ignore details of temporal, spatial, and intrapopulation dietary variation in top-level consumers. In this study, intrapopulation dietary variation of a dominant carnivore, the Laughing Gull (Larus atricilla), was examined using carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur isotope analysis of gull tissues as well as their prey (fish, invertebrates, and insects) from the Virginia...

Integrated pest management and allocation of control efforts for vector-borne diseases Integrated pest management and allocation of control efforts for vector-borne diseases
Applications of various control methods were evaluated to determine how to integrate methods so as to minimize the number of human cases of vector-borne diseases. These diseases can be controlled by lowering the number of vector-human contacts (e.g., by pesticide applications or use of repellents), or by lowering the proportion of vectors infected with pathogens (e.g., by lowering or...

Integrating resource, social, and managerial indicators of quality into carrying capacity decision-making Integrating resource, social, and managerial indicators of quality into carrying capacity decision-making
In park and wilderness management, integrating social and resource indicators is essential to meet park mandates that require the protection of both experiential and resource conditions. This paper will address the challenges we face in integrating social and resource data and outline a study in progress in Yosemite National Park. This study will develop and apply a management model that

Dicofol residues in eggs and carcasses of captive American kestrels Dicofol residues in eggs and carcasses of captive American kestrels
American kestrels (Falco sparverius) were fed diets containing 0 (control), 1, 3, 10, and 30 μg/g (wet wt) of Kelthane®. Residues of dicofol and its metabolites were then analyzed in the eggs and carcasses of females. Significant differences occurred among treatments for residues of both p,p′‐dicofol and p,p′‐dechlorodicofol (DCD) in both eggs and carcasses and for p,p′...

Annual movements of a steppe eagle (Aquila nipalensis) summering in Mongolia and wintering in Tibet Annual movements of a steppe eagle (Aquila nipalensis) summering in Mongolia and wintering in Tibet
An adult female steppe eagle (Aquila nipalensis Hodgson) was captured and fitted with a satellite transmitter in June 1995 in southeastern Mongolia. In fall, it traveled southwest towards India as expected, but stopped in southeastern Tibet and wintered in a restricted zone within the breeding range of the steppe eagle. In spring, the bird returned to the same area of Mongolia where it...

Impact of vinclozolin on reproductive behavior and endocrinology in Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) Impact of vinclozolin on reproductive behavior and endocrinology in Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica)
The impact of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) has been demonstrated in mammalian models, but less research is available for avian species. The effects of vinclozolin (VIN), an antiandrogenic fungicide, on sexual differentiation and maturation were investigated in Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). On day 4 of incubation, embryos were exposed to no treatment, oil, or 25...
