Haemocytes of Ixodes scapularis were characterized on the basis of their ultrastructure by transmission electron microscopy of thin sections. Three types of haemocytes were identified: prohaemocytes, plasmatocytes, and granulocytes. Prohaemocytes are undifferentiated cells containing very little cytoplasm (high nucelo-cytoplasmic ratio).
