Population dynamics of neotropical migratory birds using agriculture-forest mosaics in Campeche, Mexico Population dynamics of neotropical migratory birds using agriculture-forest mosaics in Campeche, Mexico
In many areas of the tropics, forests are being converted to agriculture and other uses at a rapid rate. Previous research has documented that forest-breeding migratory birds are distributed across a wide variety of habitat types during midwinter. However, to evaluate the relative importance of different habitat types to wintering birds, we need to examine habitat-specific estimates of...

Delineating bird populations using ring recoveries Delineating bird populations using ring recoveries
We delineate bird populations using cluster analysis to group ringing sites based on pairwise comparisons of recoveries. Clustering provides a quantitative (but non-unique) grouping that can be used to examine the relationships of bird distributions at both local and regional geographic scales. Clustering is based on similarity matrices composed of pairwise comparisons of recovery...

Productivity of saker falcons (Falco cherrug) in Mongolia Productivity of saker falcons (Falco cherrug) in Mongolia
During the summers 1994-1995, over 80 eyries were located on over 10,000 km of survey routes in Mongolia. Where possible, production and hatch dates were assessed when the eyries were found. For 75 nesting attempts, breeding success was found to be 92%. The average number of young per brood was 28 for 68 attempts. The number of young fledged per pair by year were 3.2 in 1994 and 2.6 in...

Movements by two small fishes in a large stream Movements by two small fishes in a large stream
Movements by adult Percina nigrojasciata and juvenile Lepomis auritus were examined in a large Coastal Plain stream in the southeastern United States. I marked fishes with subcutaneous injections of acrylic paints to indicate capture location within a 550-m long study site. Recaptures over an 18-month period primarily occurred within 33m of the original capture location, suggesting long...

Do downy woodpeckers migrate? Do downy woodpeckers migrate?
Seasonal movement and migration of Downy Woodpeckers (Picoides pubescens) are indicated in several sources in the literature. Analyses of 3784 recoveries of banded birds, with other data, indicate that the species is resident, and that movements of a few individuals may indicate dispersal.

Sodium Monofluoroacetate (1080) Hazards to Fish, Wildlife, and Invertebrates: A Synoptic Review Sodium Monofluoroacetate (1080) Hazards to Fish, Wildlife, and Invertebrates: A Synoptic Review
Sodium monofluoroacetate (CH2FCOONa), also known as 1080, domestic use is currently restricted to livestock-protection collars on sheep and goats to selectively kill depredating coyotes. The chemical is readily absorbed by ingestion or inhalation. At lethal doses, metabolic conversion of fluoroacetate to fluorocitrate results in the accumulation of citrate in the tissues and death within...

Secondary toxicity in raptors caused by white phosphorus Secondary toxicity in raptors caused by white phosphorus
White phosphorus (WP) has caused waterfowl die-offs in a tidal saltmarsh used by the U.S. Army for artillery practice for > 40 years. Bald (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)and golden (Aquila chrysaetos) eagles have been observed feeding on dead and dying waterfowl on the marsh and may be exposed to WP through ingestion of contaminated birds. One carcass of each eagle species has been found with...

Dicofol and DDT residues in lizard carcasses and bird eggs from Texas, Florida, and California Dicofol and DDT residues in lizard carcasses and bird eggs from Texas, Florida, and California
Dicofol is an organochlorine agricultural pesticide used to control mites. The principal commercial dicofol product is known as Kelthane TM. More than 70% of dicofol product (about 3 million Ib or 1.4 million kg) sold annually in the U.S. is applied in California, Arizona, Texas, and Florida. Florida citrus and California cotton receive more than half the total (Clark 1990). In...

Sediment toxicity in Savannah Harbor Sediment toxicity in Savannah Harbor
Savannah Harbor, located near the mouth of the Savannah River, Georgia and South Carolina, is impacted by industrial and municipal effluents. Potential release of contaminants stored in harbor sediments through dredging and shipping operations requires that contaminated areas be identified for proper management of the system and protection of wildlife resources. During 1991, Hyalella...
