Down-regulation of muscarinic receptors and the m3 subtype in white-footed mice by dietary exposure to parathion Down-regulation of muscarinic receptors and the m3 subtype in white-footed mice by dietary exposure to parathion

The effect of ad libitum dietary exposure (as occurs in the field) to parathion for 14 d was investigated on the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR) in brains and submaxillary glands of adults of a field species, the white-footed mouse Peromyscus leucopus. Immunoprecipitation using subtype selective antibodies revealed that the relative ratios of the m1-m5 mAChR subtypes in...

Campsite impact management: A survey of National Park Service backcountry managers Campsite impact management: A survey of National Park Service backcountry managers

Though a central purpose for the creation and management of parks, visitation inevitably affects the natural resources of parks. This is particularly true at campsites, where visitation and its effects are concentrated. This paper presents partial results from a survey of National Park Service managers regarding general strategies and specific actions implemented by park managers to...

Estimating survival of radio-tagged birds Estimating survival of radio-tagged birds

Parametric and nonparametric methods for estimating survival of radio-tagged birds are described. The general assumptions of these methods are reviewed. An estimate based on the assumption of constant survival throughout the period is emphasized in the overview of parametric methods. Two nonparametric methods, the Kaplan-Meier estimate of the survival funcrion and the log rank test, are...

Population trends of quails in North America Population trends of quails in North America

We used North American Breeding Bird Survey data (1966-91) to estimate distribution, relative abundance, and populatiori trends of quails. Population trends in grassland/shrub birds sympatric with northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) were also examined. Northern bobwhite and scaled quail (Callipepla squamata) populations have declined since 1966. Rates of decline for these quails have

A receptor binding assay applied to monitoring the neurotoxicity of parathion to Peromyscus after oral exposure A receptor binding assay applied to monitoring the neurotoxicity of parathion to Peromyscus after oral exposure

Many naturally occurring toxins, as well as pesticides, metals, and other compounds that occur in our environment from anthropogenic activities, stimulate or antagonize neuro-receptors to produce acute and/or chronic toxicities. Recent advances in laboratory instrumentation and the availability of a variety of radiolabeled ligands and type-specific drugs for numerous receptors make it...

Natal dispersal and gene flow in white-tailed deer in northeastern Minnesota Natal dispersal and gene flow in white-tailed deer in northeastern Minnesota

I documented natal dispersal and gene flow in 79 yearling white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in northeastern Minnesota during 1974–1988. Sixty-four percent (n = 28) of 44 males and 20% (n = 7) of 35 females dispersed from their natal home ranges when 1.0–1.5-years old. Eighty-six percent and 95%, of all yearlings including nondispersers, dispersed ≤26 and ≤38 km, respectively...

Natural range expansion and local extirpation of an exotic psittacine--an unsuccessful colonization attempt Natural range expansion and local extirpation of an exotic psittacine--an unsuccessful colonization attempt

The Brown-throated Parakeet Aratinga pertinax is native to Panama, northern South America, and the islands off the northern coast of Venezuela. It is widely believed that the parakeet was introduced to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, from Curacao before the mid-19th century, although no records exist as to when and how this may have occurred. The parakeet was not recorded from Vieques or...

Research, conservation, and collaboration: The role of visiting scientists in developing countries Research, conservation, and collaboration: The role of visiting scientists in developing countries

As awareness of environmental problems and the need to protect our natural resources or use them wisely has grown, scientists have become increasingly interested in conservation. Some individuals are involved in conservation-related activities through research or teaching, but most of us participate only as citizens concerned about the world in which we live. Often, we decline to take an...

Re-exposure of mallards to selenium after chronic exposure Re-exposure of mallards to selenium after chronic exposure

Adult male mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) were fed a control diet or a diet containing 15 ppm selenium as seleno-D,L-methionine for 21 weeks. After this initial exposure, the mallards were fed untreated food for 12 weeks, then were re-exposed to selenium at 100 ppm for five weeks. During re-exposure to 100 ppm selenium, the birds that had previously been exposed to 15 ppm selenium and...
