Use of an inactivated eastern equine encephalitis virus vaccine in cranes Use of an inactivated eastern equine encephalitis virus vaccine in cranes
An unprecedented outbreak of fatal eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus occurred during the late summer and fall of 1984 in endangered whooping cranes (Grus americana) at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Laurel, Maryland. As part of efforts to prevent future epizootics of EEE. studies were conducted to evaluate the antibody response of cranes following vaccination with a...

Deer population in the Central Superior National Forest, 1967-1985 Deer population in the Central Superior National Forest, 1967-1985
Deer were aerially censused each winter from 1976 through 1985 in a 400-sq km2 area near Isabella, Minnesota, in the Central Superior National Forest; a correction factor based on aerial observability of radio-tagged deer in the same region was then applied to the census figures. Deer numbers, which had reached an estimated 3.5/sq km, declined drastically in the early 1970's, fluctuated...

Use of miniroutes and Breeding Bird Survey data to estimate abundance Use of miniroutes and Breeding Bird Survey data to estimate abundance
1. Information on relative abundance is easily obtained and adds greatly to the value of an atlas project. 2. The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) provides annual counts (birds per 50 roadside stops) that can be used to: (1) map relative abundance by physiographic region within a state or province, (2) map relative abundance on a more local scale by using results from individual routes, or (3)...

Selenium and heavy metals in San Francisco Bay diving ducks Selenium and heavy metals in San Francisco Bay diving ducks
We analyzed for selenium (Se) and heavy metals in greater scaups (Aythya marila) and surf scoters (Melanitta perspicillata) collected from southern San Francisco Bay in March and April 1982. There were no differences (P > 0.05) between species for liver concentrations of silver (Ag), mercury (Hg), or lead (Pb). Copper (Cu) (P 0.001) and zinc (Zn) (P 0.01) levels were higher in scaups...

Analysis of utilization of desert habitats with dynamic simulation Analysis of utilization of desert habitats with dynamic simulation
The effects of climate and herbivores on cool desert shrubs in north-western Utah were investigated with a dynamic simulation model. Cool desert shrublands are extensively managed as grazing lands, and are defoliated annually by domestic livestock. A primary production model was used to simulate harvest yields and shrub responses under a variety of climatic regimes and defoliation...
