The significance of diurnal terrestrial emergency of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in the Gal?pagos Archipelago The significance of diurnal terrestrial emergency of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in the Gal?pagos Archipelago
The diurnal, nonreproductive emergence of green turtles Chelonia mydas in Galapagos apparently occurs throughout the year on several islands. Turtles on beaches have cloacal temperatures that exceed temperatures of adjacent coastal waters. Basking turtles are predominately females. We hypothesize that females bask to accelerate digestion and fat build-up, necessary antecedents to egg...

Some observations on the use of discriminant analysis in ecology Some observations on the use of discriminant analysis in ecology
The application of discriminant analysis in ecological investigations is discussed. The appropriate statistical assumptions for discriminant are illustrated, and both classification and group separation approaches are outlined. Three assumptions that are crucial in ecological studies are discussed at length, and the consequences of their violation are developed. These assumptions are: (1...

Cholinesterase inhibition of birds inhabiting wheat fields treated with methyl parathion and toxaphene Cholinesterase inhibition of birds inhabiting wheat fields treated with methyl parathion and toxaphene
Red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) and dickcissels (Spiza americana) inhabiting wheat fields treated with 0.67 kg AI/ha methyl parathion and 1.35 kg AI/ha toxaphene showed brain cholinesterase (ChE) inhibition compared with birds inhabiting untreated fields. Maximum inhibition occurred about five days after insecticide application. ChE activities again approached “normal” 10...

Blood indicators of seasonal metabolic patterns in captive adult gray wolves Blood indicators of seasonal metabolic patterns in captive adult gray wolves
Blood samples and physical data were collected weekly from a colony of gray wolves (Canis lupus) maintained under natural weather arid light conditions. Sampling over 33 continuous months indicated that hemoglobin, hematocrit, red blood cells, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and thyroxine exhibited consistent circannual patterns of variation in both males and females...
