Effects of dietary ABATE® on reproductive success, duckling survival, behavior, and clinical pathology in game-farm mallards Effects of dietary ABATE® on reproductive success, duckling survival, behavior, and clinical pathology in game-farm mallards
Forty-four pairs of game-farm mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) were fed ABATE® 4E (temephos) to yield 0, 1, or 10 ppm ABATE® beginning before the initiation of lay, and terminating when ducklings were 21 days of age. The mean interval between eggs laid was greater for hens fed 10 ppm ABATE® than for controls. Clutch size, fertility, hatchability, nest attentiveness of incubating hens, and...

Effects of chronic dietary lead in American kestrels (Falco sparverius) Effects of chronic dietary lead in American kestrels (Falco sparverius)
American kestrels were fed a diet containing 0, 10, or 50 ppm lead (Pb) powder for at least 5 mo. Blood delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) activity in birds receiving 50 ppm Pb was as low as 20% of controls but no significant effects were noted in packed cell volume (PCV) or hemoglobin concentration (Hb). Mean liver Pb residues in birds fed 50 ppm Pb were 1.3 and 2.4 ppm (dry...

Variation in survival and recovery rates of ring-necked ducks Variation in survival and recovery rates of ring-necked ducks
Band recovery data were used to examine sex-specific, geographic, and temporal variations in survival and recovery rates of ring-necked ducks (Aythya collaris). Survival rates were higher (P 0.05) for males than for females in the preseason-banded sample and in 2 of 3 postseason samples; recovery rates were higher (P 0.05) for females in 1 postseason sample. Survival rates of postseason...

Reduced fecundity in small populations of the rare plant Gentianopsis ciliate (Gentianaceae) Reduced fecundity in small populations of the rare plant Gentianopsis ciliate (Gentianaceae)
Habitat destruction is the main cause for the biodiversity crisis. Surviving populations are often fragmented, i.e., small and isolated from each other. Reproduction of plants in small populations is often reduced, and this has been attributed to inbreeding depression, reduced attractiveness for pollinators, and reduced habitat quality in small populations. Here we present data on the...

Industrial effluents as a source of mercury contamination in terrestrial riparian vertebrates Industrial effluents as a source of mercury contamination in terrestrial riparian vertebrates
Eight species of piscivorous and insectivorous birds and one species of bat collected along Virginia's North Fork of the Holston River contained elevated mercury residues. The ubiquitous occurrence of mercury in riparian insectivores implicates aquatic insects as a vehicle for spreading mercury contamination from one ecosystem to another and expands the ecological ramifications of...

Atlantic Flyway review: Region V Atlantic Flyway review: Region V
One new station was added to the Region V roster in 1981: Bestgate in the Annapolis suburbs. We also have a summary from Cylburn Arboretum in Baltimore City, a station that had not reported since 1977. The total regional effort of 82,282 net-hours was surpassed only in 1980. Although the total net-hours of operation decreased only 10.8% from 1980, the number of birds banded dropped 15.8%...
