Nest and brood attentiveness in female black ducks Nest and brood attentiveness in female black ducks
Incubation rhythms and brood attentiveness of radio-marked Black Ducks (Anas rubripes) were studied in southcentral Maine during 1977-1980. Recess duration and frequency differed between three females nesting near wetlands (x = 82 min, 2.3 recesses/day) and two nesting at upland sites(x = 183 min, I. I recesses/day), but incubation constancy was similar for all birds (x = 86.7%). A...

Shotshell and shooter effectiveness: Lead vs. steel shot for duck hunting Shotshell and shooter effectiveness: Lead vs. steel shot for duck hunting
Shooter and shotshell effectiveness were tested during the 1979 waterfowl season at the Schell-Osage Wildlife Management Area (WMA), Missouri. Hunters who participated in the study bagged 1,967 ducks with 10,587 shots. No significant differences in bagging, crippling, or missing rates were measured among 4 Winchester 12 gauge loads: #4 buffered and unbuffered lead and #4 and #2 steel...

Sea turtle distribution along the boundary of the Gulf Stream current off eastern Florida Sea turtle distribution along the boundary of the Gulf Stream current off eastern Florida
Aerial surveys, out to 222 km off the east coast of central Florida during August 1980, revealed that marine turtles were distributed in a narrow zone west of the Gulf Stream. Of 255 loggerhead turtles, Caretta caretta, only three were observed east of the western boundary of the Gulf Stream. Radiometric thermometry revealed that the waters occupied by most Caretta were markedly cooler...

A field evaluation of frogs as a potential source of secondary organophosphorus insecticide poisoning A field evaluation of frogs as a potential source of secondary organophosphorus insecticide poisoning
Because amphibians are relatively resistant to organophosphorus insecticides and can bioaccumulate residues to high levels, they may be a source of secondary poisoning for vertebrates that feed on them. This hypothesis was tested by determining residues in breeding upland chorus frogs Pseudacris triseriata, that were collected from ponds treated with the organophosphorus insecticide...

Responses of the iguanid lizard Anolis carolinensis to four organophosphorus pesticides Responses of the iguanid lizard Anolis carolinensis to four organophosphorus pesticides
Dose related mortality and cholinesterase effects of parathion, methyl parathion, azinphos-methyl and malathion on Anolis carolinensis were investigated. The comparative effects of the four compounds on fish, birds and mammals are well known, but the effects of organophosphates on reptiles have not been studied critically. Sensitivity and patterns of mortality from exposure to the...

Study of aggregative behavior of Rhinophrynus dorsalis tadpoles: design and analysis Study of aggregative behavior of Rhinophrynus dorsalis tadpoles: design and analysis
We conducted experiments using the apparatus and design followed by Wassersug and Hessler (1971) and Wassersug (1973) to test the aggregative behavior of tadpoles of Rhinophrynus dorsalis in response to visual and olfactory stimuli. Results neither supported nor refuted the hypothesis that either stimulus is used as a mechanism for school formation. The exercise did lead to doubts about...

Effects of a chemical dispersant and crude oil on breeding ducks Effects of a chemical dispersant and crude oil on breeding ducks
Effects of chemically dispersed crude oil on mallard reproduction. Incubating female mallards were exposed to a water source treated with either Prudhoe Bay crude oil, Corexit 9527, or a combination of oil and dispersant during the first 10 da of development. Used thermocouple probes to monitor incubation temperature. Measured hatching success, incubation temperature, and survival of...

Nesting by one-year-old black-crowned night herons on Hope Island, Rhode Island Nesting by one-year-old black-crowned night herons on Hope Island, Rhode Island
There have been few consistent reports concerning the frequency and success of nesting attempts by immature night herons of the genus Nycticorax. One- year-old Black-crowned Night Herons (Nycticorax nycticorax) mated to 2-yr-old or older birds built nests and incubated eggs in the wild (Gross 1923). In a captive colony, many 1-yr-old pairs of night herons courted and built nests, and one...
