Booklet from St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center wins two national awards
The publication, “Coastal and Marine Science of the U.S. Geological Survey in St. Petersburg, Florida” has won a first-place Blue Pencil Award from the National Association of Government Communicators and a USGS Shoemaker Award for Communications Product Excellence.
The booklet, Coastal and Marine Science of the U.S. Geological Survey in St. Petersburg, Florida, summarizes the robust coastal and marine research being conducted by staff at the USGS St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center (SPCMSC). The product has been shared with partners and stakeholders across the Nation including research institutions, community organizations, international partners, congressional representatives, and the general public. Complete with stunning field photos, a little history, and highlights from the center’s research, this General Information Product (GIP) takes readers on an entertaining and informative journey to get to know the “USGS St. Pete,” as we call it here in Florida.
The National Association of Government Communicators (NAGC) is dedicated to advocating, promoting, and recognizing excellence in government communication. The Blue Pencil and Gold Screen Awards underscore the association’s high standards of professionalism in public service. The NAGC award selection committee chose the St. Pete booklet as the first place winner in the Digital – Electronic Publication category, as announced at the awards ceremony in Portland, OR, on April 19th.
The USGS Shoemaker Award for Communications Product Excellence recognizes USGS products that demonstrate extraordinary effectiveness in communicating and translating complex scientific concepts and discoveries into words and pictures that capture the interest and imagination of the American public. The St. Pete GIP also won the Large Print category for 2022. The Eugene M. Shoemaker Communications Awards were established to recognize extraordinary examples of communicating and translating complex scientific concepts and discoveries into words and pictures that capture the interest and imagination of the American public and increase their knowledge and understanding of the USGS mission.
