Groundwater is the source of drinking water for nearly 50% of the U.S. population. Increased use of groundwater resources for domestic, agricultural, industrial, and environmental needs has led to uncertainty concerning the ability of systems to meet current and future demands. Come learn about why groundwater is a critical resource for the Nation, and see how USGS is working with partners to assess, monitor and quantify the availability and sustainability of the Nation's groundwater resources.

Speaker Biographies

Bill Cunningham

Bill Cunningham is the Acting Chief for the Office of Groundwater at the U.S. Geological Survey.  This office oversees the USGS Groundwater Resources Program as well as technical and policy aspects of USGS groundwater investigations and data collection activities across the Nation.  Prior to joining the Office of Groundwater as Assistant Chief in 2000, Bill worked on groundwater science investigations in the Ohio and North Carolina Water Science Centers.  He belongs to a number of professional organizations and serves as Co-Chair of the Subcommittee on Groundwater for the Federal Advisory Committee on Water Information. Bill received undergraduate and graduate degrees from The Ohio State University. 

Kevin Rein

Kevin Rein is Deputy State Engineer at the Colorado Division of Water Resources, also known as the State Engineer’s Office. He manages the Water Supply Section that includes a staff of engineers, technicians, hydrogeologists, and specialists.  This section evaluates water well permit applications, reviews applications to the state’s water courts for water rights and water uses, and works with the courts and water users towards the resolution of water rights matters. This section also evaluates and approves plans for temporary uses of water.  Kevin is a native of Colorado, received his engineering degree from Colorado State University, and is a registered Professional Engineer in Colorado.

Robert Schreiber

Bob Schreiber is a Vice President at CDM Smith and is currently the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) representative to the Federal Advisory Committee on Water Information and co-chair of its Subcommittee on Ground Water, focusing on implementation of a National Ground Water Monitoring Network. He is also active in the National Ground Water Association, serving on its Board of Directors and participating in its Government Affairs initiatives. He is a registered professional engineer with over 36 years of experience in water resource planning and computerized engineering analysis. He graduated from MIT’s Civil Engineering Department where he focused on groundwater hydrology and water resource systems analysis.

Emcee: Christine Reimer

Christine Reimer is the Government Affairs Director for the National Ground Water Association (NGWA).  She directs the NGWA’s Washington representatives and also serves as liaison to the membership and the Government Affairs Committee.  Under the oversight and review of the NGWA Board of Directors, the Government Affairs Committee establishes NGWA’s federal legislative and regulatory agenda and develops the Association’s official policy on issues.
