Small-Scale Data

The online version of the National Atlas (officially known as the 1997-2014 Edition of the National Atlas of the United States) was removed from service on September 30, 2014. The National Map (TNM) recognizes the importance of continuing to make a collection of the small-scale datasets, originally developed for the National Atlas, available to users.

Approximately 624 of these former National Atlas data sets are still available through the USGS EROS Archive and its EarthExplorer application by searching in the ‘Digital Maps’ category or on the term “National Atlas”.

Small-scale maps have an advantage over large-scale maps when there is a need to show a large area in a single view. This makes small-scale maps an ideal solution for scientists, decision-makers, and planners needing to provide a geographical context for the research projects. Generally, certain geographical and feature details found in large-scale maps are limited or omitted in small-scale maps. The choice of small-scale maps always comes down to the intended use of the final map.

The National Map

The small-scale data for boundaries, contours, hydrography, and transportation can be found and downloaded free at TNM Downloader. The National Map incorporates the small-scale data in its web mapping and web feature services as part of TNM multi-scale theme overlay services. These services are listed in the TNM Service List and can be viewed in the National Map Viewer or added to a variety of GIS software or applications for further use.

The USGS Store

The National Atlas wall maps are available for purchase through the USGS Store until supplies are exhausted. No new wall maps will be made. Call 1-888-ASK-USGS (or 303-202-4700 from outside the United States) for information on price and availability.
