3DEP Product News

The National Map offers a broader suite of elevation products as part of the 3D Elevation Program.

Product offerings include:

  • A standard 1-meter digital elevation model (DEM)
  • A standard 5-meter DEM (Alaska only)
  • Lidar point clouds with point classifications
  • IfSAR digital surface models (Alaska)
  • IfSAR orthorectified radar intensity imagery (Alaska)
  • DEMs in their original (source) resolution

The USGS continues to maintain three seamless standard DEMs of The National Map – the 1/3, 1, and 2 arc-second DEMs.

As of January 2015 the 1/9 arc-second DEM layer is no longer being updated; however, it continues to be available and until replaced by quality level 2 or better 3DEP data it remains the highest resolution available for about 1/4 of the conterminous U.S.

The U.S. Interagency Elevation Inventory (USIEI) displays high-accuracy topographic and bathymetric data for the United States and its territories. The project is a collaborative effort between NOAA, the U.S. Geological Survey, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This resource is a comprehensive, nationwide listing of known high-accuracy topographic data, including lidar and IfSAR, and bathymetric data, including NOAA hydrographic surveys, multibeam data, and bathymetric lidar.

NOAA’s Digital Coast is a source for coastal lidar, imagery, and land cover data.
