Editor Roles

In order to ensure a high level of data quality, we’ve instituted a tiered quality assurance editing process that directs data through multiple checks.

There are three tiers that both our volunteers and the information collected pass through: Standard Editors, Peer Reviewers, and Advanced Editors.

Standard Editors

Who are they?

All new TNMCorps volunteers start out as Standard Editors. After editing at least 25 unique points and passing a quality check of their data, they have the option of advancing to the Peer Reviewer role or remaining a Standard Editor.

What do they do?

Standard Editors can focus on updating points with a red or yellow border (i.e., unedited data and data that hasn’t been edited in at last three years or longer), and challenges marked as easy. Standard Editors can also add new structure points or remove obsolete ones.

Peer Reviewers

Who are they?

Peer Reviewers have edited at least 25 points as a Standard Editor and passed a quality check of their data.

What do they do?

Peer Reviewers are primarily responsible for checking and improving points edited by Standard Editors (found in the Peer Reviewer mapping challenge). The purpose of the Peer Reviewer role is to review another person’s edits; however, Peer Reviewers also have the option of updating points with a red or yellow border and all other available challenges. Peer Reviewers can also add new structure points or remove obsolete ones.

Advanced Editors

Who are they?

Advanced Editors have edited at least 200 or more points as a Standard Editor or Peer Reviewer and passed a quality check of their data.

What do they do?

Advanced Editors have gained a significant amount of editing experience and have demonstrated meticulous attention to detail, so the points that Advanced Editors update are not subject to review by other editors. Advanced Editors can update data with a red or yellow border and participate in any of the listed mapping challenges. Advanced Editors are also encouraged to participate in mapping challenges listed as difficult and might also be called on occasionally to assist with special editing tasks. Advanced Editors can also add new structure points or remove obsolete ones and participate in any of the listed mapping challenges.
