Alaska Mapping Executive Committee

The Alaska Mapping Executive Committee (AMEC) coordinates the modernization of critical Alaska map layers. Executives from fifteen federal agencies and Departments and the State meet twice annually to prioritize mapping objectives. AMEC currently promotes acquisition of several digital map layers including Imagery, Elevation, Terrestrial Hydrography, Coastal Shorelines and Bathymetry, and GRAV-D.

Meeting Information

  • The most recent meeting was held virtually on Thursday, May 14, 2020. Highlights included:
    • Updates were provided on acquisition of elevation, imagery, surface hydrography, and shoreline themes.
    • Requirements for and status of mapping wetlands, vegetation, high resolution elevation, and geophysical survey data were presented. 
    • Announcement of the formation of an AMEC Coastal Mapping Technical Subcommittee to develop and manage an implementation plan for acquiring coastal topographic/bathymetric data for priority areas of interest in the State.
    • Executives requested that the wetlands mapping and surface hydrography mapping coordination teams investigate opportunities to collaborate.
  • The next meeting will be held in fall 2020. Dates in September and October 2020 are being explored. Coordinators will focus on maximizing participation based on state and federal travel limitations.
