Basin characteristics developed in support of an investigation of regional skew of peak flow for the Upper Mississippi and Souris-Red-Rainy basins, 2024
Several basin characteristics are computed for gaged watersheds within and near the Upper Mississippi and Souris-Red-Rainy river basins, so that the basin characteristics may be tested for significance in predicting regional skew of peak flow. Basin characteristics were computed using the USGS StreamStats applications for Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Basin characteristics for gages in Michigan were within the data extent of Wisconsin StreamStats. Nebraska did not have a StreamStats application at the time this data was being prepared, so other geographic information system tools were used to compute basin characteristics for gages within Nebraska. Please see the Process Steps within this metadata file for additional detail. Rasters (in tif format) are presented for the 24-hour, 100-year rainfall intensity, Level 3 Ecoregions, percent forest, percent impervious, percent storage, mean annual precipitation, and saturated vertical hydraulic conductivity. Tif files are presented as a single raster covering the StreamStats study area. The Level 3 Ecoregion rasters available vary by state and reflect only the Level 3 Ecoregions present within that States StreamStats Study area. Shapefiles are also presented for the gage locations and the watersheds of those gages. A spreadsheet is presented summarizing the basin characterisitcs values for each gage watershed, and a comma spaced variable file of the StreamStats projection for each applicable state is provided.
