Biological and Chemical Findings Associated with Melanoma and Other Melanistic Lesions in Brown Bullhead Ameiurus nebulosus from Selected Northeast United States and Quebec Waterbodies
April 27, 2026
Brown bullhead were collected from seven sites in Lake Memphremagog in Vermont and Quebec, Hermon Pond in Maine and Village Pond in New Hampshire. Both visibly normal and lesioned adult bullhead were collected at each site. Biological data collected included length, weight, sex, age, condition factor and presence or absence of non-raised and raised black lesions. Plasma from five sites was analyzed for 40 per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Concentration of the 17 PFAS detected at least once are included in the dataset. Pieces of skin from visibly normal and lesioned bullhead were analyzed for 23 elements. Concentrations of the eight elements detected commonly are included in the dataset.

Melanistic lesions, including non-raised black areas due to proliferations of melanocytes and melanomacrophages in the dermis and epidermis, as well as raised black areas consistent with melanoma, are described in brown bullhead (BBH) Ameiurus nebulosus from three water bodies in the northeastern United States and Quebec, Canada. First observed in the Vermont portion of Lake Memphremagog...
