LA-MC-ICP-MS Hf isotopes in zircons from the Mountain Pass Intrusive Suite, California
March 25, 2025
This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release accompanies planned publication ‘Geochemistry and radiogenic isotopes constrain the mantle source region of the Mountain Pass Intrusive Suite, California' and planned data release 'Whole-rock geochemical and isotopic data for the Mountain Pass Intrusive Suite, California'. The data release includes laser ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) Lu-Hf zircon data for zircons separated from eight samples in the Mountain Pass Intrusive Suite. The U-Pb geochronology and age interpretations for this set of samples is published in Watts et al. (2022). The samples were analyzed to investigate the mantle source region and paleotectonic setting for the Mountain Pass Intrusive Suite.

Multidisciplinary Investigations of REE Mineralization at Mountain Pass and in the Southeast Mojave Desert, California
In this time of increased focus on renewable energy technologies, rare earth elements (REEs) are of critical importance. For example, neodymium (Nd) is a REE used in the generator and motor magnets of wind turbines and electric vehicles. Reliance on REE imports puts the U.S. at high risk for supply disruption. The project will integrate geology, geophysics, petrology, geochronology, and economic...
Geochemistry and radiogenic isotopes constrain the mantle source region of the Mountain Pass Intrusive Suite, California
The Mountain Pass carbonatite stock is the largest rare earth element (REE) deposit and only active REE mine in the United States. The carbonatite intrusion and spatially associated alkaline silicate intrusions constitute the Mountain Pass Intrusive Suite, which is located within the Mojave Province in California. Both the carbonatite and the alkaline silicate rocks are enriched in large...
