Location, length, and height of landslides triggered by tropical storm Chata'an in Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia
In 2002, tropical storm Chata’an triggered more than 250 landslides in Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia (Harp and others, 2004). This data release includes shapefiles of the original mapping from oblique aerial photographs of landslide-affected areas (source and runout) (Harp and others, 2004), extraction of height (H) and length (L) from the original mapped landslides, and revised mapping of large landslides triggered by tropical storm Chata’an on the island of Tonoas. Elevations to calculate height and length were extracted from a re-projected USGS 10-m digital elevation model (details of DEM processing provided in Brien and others, 2025). The revised mapping of 51 landslide-affected areas on Tonoas was possible with post-event imagery (Maxar, 2004a, b) and details are provided in the processing steps. This revised mapping was not used for height and length metrics.
This data release includes three files:
1) OFR2004-1348_landslides.zip – zipped shapefile containing polygons of landslide-affected areas from original mapping of Chata’an triggered landslides,
2) Chataan_xyz_H_L.csv - approximate locations of highest and lowest elevations, difference in elevation (H), and straight-line horizontal distance (L) between highest and lowest elevation within each landslide polygon. These locations and elevations were used for calculation of H/L metrics for Chata’an triggered landslides, and
3) Tonoas_Chataan_landslides.zip - zipped shapefile containing revised polygons of 51 landslide-affected areas for Chata’an triggered landslides on the island of Tonoas.
