SPCMSC summer interns presented at University of South Florida 2024 Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium
Students participating in the St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center’s summer internship program presented posters on their research experiences.
The USGS is committed to engaging and supporting the next generation of scientists though a range of opportunities (visit USGS Youth and Education in Science). This summer, the SPCMSC hired 5 Pathways undergraduate interns across a range of projects and subject areas. The interns are gaining experience in topics spanning marine operations, structure-from-motion image analysis, paleoreconstruction of climate from mollusk shells, modeling hurricane impacts to shorelines, tracing microplastics in the Gulf of America, effects of the 2023 ocean heatwave on endangered corals, and more. The USGS students have also participated in multiple social-networking events with their Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) counterparts at USF, Fulbright Scholars from around the country, and summer interns from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
