USGS MRP Coloring Page Bauxite

Detailed Description

Critical Minerals Coloring Sheet: Bauxite

Bauxite, a rock with a mix of aluminum-rich minerals, is the main source for the critical minerals aluminum and gallium. Fun fact: bauxite forms in wet tropical places like Brazil and Guinea.

Aluminum is a lightweight metal used for lots of things like cars, airplanes, cooking foil, house siding, and kitchen appliances. It is even used in smartphones for buttons, ports, and the body! Gallium helps make the screens of smartphones shine bright.

Pictured is a sample of bauxite with round grains with layers: these are called pisoids. Also pictured is a pair of hands holding a smartphone and the chemical symbols for both aluminum and gallium with their atomic number and atomic mass.
