Walrus Transmitter Tag
Detailed Description
A transmitter tag (see arrow on the left) is being deployed by a USGS wildlife biologist (see bottom right). Transmitter tags are deployed on the back of walruses where their skin is thickest and where their data transmissions may be received from passing satellites. Tag deployment happens in the blink of an eye with the use of a crossbow and specialized arrow. Photograph credit: Ryan Kingsbery, USGS
