All NHD and WBD Update Jobs Checked-In before July 9

June 25, 2021

Update 8/6/2021: USGS has completed the testing of NHD and WBD Update Tools for the FTP to Globus migration. NHD and WBD Update tools are now available for download and job check-outs and check-ins can now resume. The Hydrography Maintenance Portal (HMP) is up and running after this upgrade. Please read and follow setup instructions outlined in the User/Installation Guides found on the HDC.

Update 7/21/2021:

USGS continues to develop and test Globus functionality in NHD and WBD Update applications following DOI’s decision to deprecate all use of FTP on July 9, 2021. We greatly appreciate the patience of our partners during this data editing downtime. Further updates will be posted on the HDC and this page as they become available. If you need assistance, please contact

Original Message:

All NHD and WBD Update jobs must have been checked in before July 9 due to decommission of FTP. Please read below for more details.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) currently uses File Transfer Protocol (FTP) in concert with the Hydrography Maintenance Portal (HMP) and NHD and WBD Update Tools to allow partners to checkout and check-in data for editing. For example, when partners checkout data from the HMP, the data is delivered via FTP before it is opened directly in an ArcMap session.

The USGS Office of Enterprise Information has been working with the U.S. Department of the Interior to address the need for a more secure data transport protocol. USGS has selected Globus ( as the large-data transport solution that will replace FTP because it is more secure and provides better performance and reliability than FTP.

As a result of this decision, USGS is required to decommission the FTP server, rockyftp, that HMP and the NHD and WBD Update Tools use by July 9, 2021. This will directly impact the ability to access data for editing.

USGS is working on new, Globus-compliant versions of the NHD and WBD Update Tools to support this change. Until testing of the Globus-compliant tools is completed, USGS will not know if they will support checking-in data that was checked out using the current FTP version. For this reason, users must have checked-in any current jobs prior to July 9.

Please email National Hydrography Support (details at right) for assistance if you have not checked in jobs, or have any questions or concerns.
