USGS and Uzbek hydrogeologists meet to discuss groundwater availability and resource management
USGS hosted a delegation of scientists from Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Mining Industry and Geology (MinGeo) at the USGS Arizona Water Science Center in Tucson (March 30-April 3, 2026).
USGS and MinGeo participated in a science and technology exchange about the management of groundwater resources for agriculture, drinking water, and critical minerals development in Uzbekistan. USGS scientists from the Water Resources Mission Area; the Office of International Programs; Water Science Centers in New York, Upper Midwest and Arizona, as well as USGS cooperators at Tucson Water and Arizona Department of Water Resources participated in meeting planning and technical presentations.
Scientists engaged in field demonstrations and discussions about how groundwater data are collected, documented, and leveraged in research by respective agencies. The meeting highlighted various technological advancements, programmatic support, and USGS research supporting groundwater management in Arizona. MinGeo scientists gained hands-on experience with groundwater monitoring techniques and cutting edge electromagnetic geophysical imaging methods that can characterize soil and groundwater hundreds of feet below land surface. At the end of the week, USGS and MinGeo scientists discussed areas for continued collaboration and product development.
