In the past, candelilla (Euphoria antispyhilitica) (the low broom-like plant in the foreground) was harvested in the Big Bend area to make wax. This view is from the Old Ore Road in eastern side of the national park (Maxwell, 1986). The high plateau of the Chisos Mountains is in the distance. The Chisos Mountains are the eroded remnants of a larger volcanic area that formed in Tertiary time (Eocene and Oligocene, and possibly later) (Kozman, 1986; Maxwell, 1994).
