Upper Ernst Arroyo Canyon (east of Ernst Tinaja) is carved in rocks of Cretaceous age (Buda Limestone, Del Rio Clay, and Santa Elena Formation) that form the core of Sierra Del Carmen, a mountainous ridge that runs north- to-south along the eastern side of Big Bend National Park (Maxwell, 1986).
