Active lava deltas are unstable, Kīlauea, Hawai‘i

2000 (approx.)

Detailed Description

Lava deltas are built of interfingering flows and loose lava fragments with internal zones of weakness. Lava deltas are extremely unstable and prone to collapse into the sea. Lava deltas may also slowly sink several centimeters per month as the submarine debris pile shifts under the weight of the overlying lava flows.
