Detailed Description

As a part of the Shenandoah River HABs Project, USGS scientists periodically take measurements of water chemistry using water quality monitoring sondes to try and understand the drivers behind harmful algal blooms. On this day, algae was so abundant in the river that some became tangled on the water quality monitoring equipment.
