Cle Elum River, a tributary of the Yakima River in Washington state

Detailed Description

The Cle Elum River, a tributary of the Yakima River in Washington state. Sockeye salmon reintroduction efforts were initiated in the Cle Elum River by the Yakama Nation and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife in 2009. As part of that effort, adult sockeye salmon are collected in the Columbia River and transported to the Cle Elum River where they are released to spawn naturally. Juvenile sockeye salmon that are produced eventually move downstream and outmigrate to the Pacific Ocean. USGS's Western Fisheries Research Center has been conducting research on sockeye salmon in the Cle Elum and Yakima rivers since 2017, providing information required for decision-making related to the reintroduction effort.
