Common Eider implant surgery in Maine

Dr. Glenn Olsen is performing surgery on a female Common Eider to implant a small satellite tracking device in the duck. The surgery is done under sterile conditions and general anesthetic. This research is part of a study funded by the Sea Duck Joint Venture and the Canadian Wildlife Service to look at the breeding biology of Common Eiders along the Atlantic coast from Maine to Labrador.
