Consumptive water use

Detailed Description

Not all water withdrawals are returned to the local environment. Some water is lost because it is evaporated, transpired, incorporated into products or crops, or otherwise made unavailable for immediate use. Water use that does not return to the local environment is called consumptive use.  Crop irrigation accounted for 90% of all the consumptive losses during 2010 to 2020, whereas thermoelectric and public supply each accounted for a small fraction of consumptive water use.
