El Morro - a Spanish inscription

Detailed Description

As early as the 17th century, members of Spanish expeditions left messages of their passage on the walls of Inscription Rock. This is a Spanish inscription carved by Ramon Garcia Jurado in 1709. U.S. military personnel on expeditions through the area left many inscriptions as well. Inscription Rock also bears petroglyphs left by people of Ancestral Puebloan culture who built structures on top of the mesa starting in 1375 A.D. Today the National Park Service is focusing on stabilization of these historic inscriptions and petroglyphs (NPS, 2007).
