Hawaii Volcanoes - Halema'uma'u Crater
Detailed Description
Halema'uma'u Crater. The rocks at the base of the crater formed from lava erupted in 1974 (USGS, 2000). Yellow stains on the rocks are from sulfur-rich mineral accumulations near steam vents. Offerings to the Hawaiian goddess, Pele, are often placed along the rim of this crater.
