Landers distributed breaks

1992 (approx.)

Detailed Description

In some places the Landers earthquake generated a clean, narrow break at the earth's surface.  In other places the earthquake caused more distributed breaks due to either a "feathering" of the fault as the rupture reaches the surface, or to shaking that causes slumping of shallow sandy sediments.
