Detailed Description
Lava fountain blasts lava fragments 425 m (1,395 ft) above the vent during the 3rd of 17 fountaining episodes. Pieces of spatter as large as 60 cm (2 ft) in diameter rained down on the road and shattered the wooden guardrail. Other pieces punched shallow depressions in the asphalt surface. On the leeward side of the growing cone, the Crater Rim Drive road was covered by 6 m (20 ft) of pumice in the late evening of November 28; 11 hours later, the pumice was as deep as 25 m (82 ft)!
