Map showing the April 16, 2018 M7.0 Kumamoto, Japan EEW times, with the earthquake epicenter shown as a red star in the center of the circles. (The second red star to the northeast is a large aftershock.) The concentric circles denote the initial EEW warning times. The innermost dotted circle doesn’t include the 2-second communication latency, but the next dash-dotted circle does include the latency. Most residents in the area of the strongest shaking (red area) did not receive any warning, and 45 people were killed. (from Wald, 2020, see reference below)
