Measuring soil water infiltration

Detailed Description

A USGS scientist prepares a mini-disc infiltrometer to assess soil water infiltration. The degree to which water can infiltrate soil is closely tied to soil carbon content. By measuring infiltration and other soil qualities associated with soil carbon, USGS scientists hope to determine whether restoration of plant communities also restores soil functions such as water infiltration that are important for native plant establishment and resilience.
