No significant changes at Kīlauea's summit water lake

Detailed Description

This close up view of the eastern portion of Kīlauea's summit water lake shows the variations in surface color that are common. The western portion of the lake (bottom right) is often brown, while the eastern portion (upper left) is more tan. The sharp color boundary between the brown and tan zones shifts from minute to minute. At the very eastern end (upper left corner of photo) the water often looks slightly greenish, and thermal camera images show this is a zone of hot water influx into the lake. USGS photo by M. Patrick.
