Phantom Ranch Tour - cliff face in the Coconino Sandstone

Detailed Description

This cliff face in the Coconino Sandstone along the South Kaibab Trail consists of massive sandstone beds that display large-scale cross stratification (or crossbedding). Large-scale cross stratification like this can be found forming today in migrating sand dunes. Fossilized animal burrows and tracks can be observed on some bedding surfaces. Some of the animals leaving tracks were four-legged (tetrapod) vertebrates (Beus, 1987).
