Plains cottonwood (Populus deltoides subsp. monilifera). Cottonwood forests dominate river flood plains in dry regions of North America, Asia and Europe. Flood-plain cottonwoods are widely distributed and long-lived and have distinct annual rings highly correlated with river flow. Photo by USGS.
