Polar bear locations and sea ice habitat quality during 1989-90

Detailed Description

Polar bear locations obtained by satellite tracking (red) overlaid on monthly maps of sea ice habitat quality (lighter shading is higher habitat quality) during 1989 and 1990. The sea ice retreats northward in the summer as it melts and southward in winter as it freezes, and polar bears tend to select areas near the ice edge or coast depending on season. Please see the USGS Alaska Science Center Polar Bear Program for study information.
