Quail Springs Picnic Area

Detailed Description

A Joshua tree and granitic butte (called an inselberg) on the east side of Park Boulevard at the Quail Springs Picnic Area. Inselbergs are remnant outcrops formed by the effects of weathering and erosion on jointed and fractured granitic bedrock. The finer, softer weathered material has been eroded away; more resistant bedrock has been left behind as boulder piles or small buttes of spheroidally rounded bedrock rising above a pediment or alluvium covered surface (Trent, 1997; Trent, 1998).
