Radar Tide Gage

April 2019 (approx.)

Detailed Description

Looking into the housing box of a radar tide gage deployed at the USGS 01409125 Barnegat Bay at Barnegat Light, New Jersey, tide station.

Radars are used to measure surface water levels at many tide gage locations. The Radar is mounted inside protective housing and shoots electromagnetic pulses which get reflected off the water’s surface. The time it takes for these pulses to get received by the sensor again is used to calculate the level of the water. These data are averaged using an NOS averaging algorithm and logged as 6-minute readings.
