Silver Gate landslide area, YNP.

Detailed Description

At Silver Gate, only a few kilometers from Mammoth, one can drive through a large landslide off of Terrace Mountain. The rocks consist of travertine (calcium carbonate) formed by a hot spring system that existed in the area several hundred thousand years ago. Travertine can be seem forming today at Mammoth Hot Springs, just downhill from Silver Gate. At Yellowstone, the landslide deposits at Silver Gate are also called the Hoodoos.
