Detailed Description

USGS Mineral Resources Program (MRP) color by number for the critical mineral copper and its ore mineral chalcopyrite.

Eureka! You found the mineral chalcopyrite (kal-co-pie-rite), black and dark yellow, which is an ore for the critical mineral copper. Copper is used in many things including electronics and electric wiring, in solar panels and wind turbines, and even brass instruments! The rock shown here is from Bingham Canyon Mine, Utah, where the world's largest open-pit mine is located. This sample also has the minerals alkali feldspar (peach) and quartz (gray).
