USGS Storm Words: Overwash

Detailed Description

The USGS has many missions before, during and after a major storm. Here is an explanation of a word we commonly use with our science.

Overwash: Is when storm-induced waves exceed the height of the dune, transporting sand over top of the dune and depositing it inland. This process can cause significant coastal changes in the landscape of beaches and dunes. Overwash leads to inundation.
