Geology is foundational to every American’s life. Many decisions that shape the economy, national security, and everyday experiences of Americans begin with understanding what lies below the ground; for instance, how to plan resilient infrastructure, power the Nation, supply key minerals for essential technologies, and manage public lands.

As the Geology, Energy, and Mineral Mission Area, our mission is to provide high quality, impartial and publicly available information about geology and geologic resources, providing a strong foundation for decision-making across many areas.

We map the geology of the Nation and assess potential geologic resources including energy resources and critical minerals. We also study the full life cycle and supply chains of energy and mineral resources, providing a fuller picture of resource availability and implications of use. Our science informs crucial investments and resource management decisions impacting the Nation’s economy, environment, and national security.
